Sabino Canyon

Today we decided to do a hike in Sabino Canyon.  This canyon is part of the Santa Catalina Mountains, north of Tucson.  It's absolutely gorgeous there, and it was another beautiful day as you can tell from the sky.  All these photos were from within the canyon.  Many western movies were shot here, with western movie stars in attendance, of course.

This is a ridge in the canyon.

I didn't mean for Gerard to be blurry - I didn't focus the camera properly (I should know better).

It's just so gorgeous.

So how it works here is you can take a tram to the top of the canyon and back, or you can get off at any stop point and walk up or down.  Or if you're tired of walking, the tram will pick you up.  Or, you can take one of the many trails in the canyon.  Because we were mid-afternoon until we got there, we chose to walk down the same road the tram takes up.  It's 3.8 miles one way (6 km).  As it was, we weren't back until almost dusk.

The Sabino Creek in the canyon criss-crosses the road 9 times.  The Creek is high enough that it overflows the road at bridges 8 of those 9 times.  We took our shoes off and put them back on again 7 times.  That in itself must have taken 20 minutes!  What a pain!  And the water was pretty cold.

Silly bicyclists.  I'm not sure what that stuff is between the falling guy and the bike.  Maybe he sh*&#$ his pants?

The canyon is covered in Saguaro Cactus.  Apparently, they don't get any limbs until they're 65 years old, or so.  This one reminded me of an airport flag-guy.

Another kind of cactus in bloom.

A bowed tree with someone underneath.

This wasn't the Sabino Creek.  No water here.  I guess the rainy season is August-November.  These creek beds are then full of water.  Hard to believe.

All in all, it was a terrific day.  We'll probably go back there sometime later to try some of the other trails.
