Tombstone and Bisbee

Today was a step back in time.  The Hunters and the Collins picked us up in their van, and Mike drove us on down to Tombstone, which is about an hour or so south of Tucson.

It was fairly busy because it's President's Day weekend here in the U.S.  Nevertheless, we persevered and took in the town.  Tombstone is famous for the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral between the Earp brothers and the Cowboys gang who were cattle rustlers.  Like most other towns in this area, they were originally mining sites, and mining still occurs today to some degree (copper now instead of silver).

There are a few of the original buildings still there, like the Birdcage and Big Nose Kate's.  But most have been replaced, and of course it's a tourist town now.  They do a re-enactment of the shootout at the O.K. Corral, but we didn't go to it.  We kinda know what will happen.

You'll see people dressed like this all over the place.

There are a few stagecoaches available to take you for a ride.

This is the outside of the Birdcage, and of course, it was not just a theatre.  It contained a house of ill-repute as well...in fact, it was probably more known for the latter.

Inside the Birdcage is a picture of Fatima who was apparently the stage name of a "special dancer".  There are bullet holes all over the inside of this place.  It is a bar as well.

Interesting sign...and you know how I like signs.

Another carriage you can take around.

And here we all are eating lunch.  It was nice we had this little room all to ourselves.  From left to right (Gerard, Bryan, Sue, Deb, Mike).

Tombstone is only about 30 miles from the Mexican border, and Bisbee, Arizona, is only about 11 miles from the Mexican border.  So we headed down there.

Apparently in August of 1912, they had a fly-killing contest.  I guess flies are a real problem here, and at that time, were spreading typhoid fever.  The reward was $10 for the most flies killed.  So today, there are flies represented in various locations.

Like on the front of this historic building.

This is downtown Bisbee.  It's a very pretty town, nestled among mountains.  It was, of course, a mining town.

There is a 'B' up there in the mountain - for Bisbee, no doubt.

Very ornate hotel.

We saw Queen Elizabeth in a shop window.  She was doing her wave, which, of course, you can't see here.

This is called Peddler's Alley, with lots of little shops and even restaurants.

OK, kids, we've decided to downsize our RV.  What do you think of our new one?

It even has a garbage can on the back!

It was an enjoyable outing today with friends.  Everyone came back to our place after for a drink before heading home.  We've made a date for golfing on Monday.

Our neighbours, Roger and Bev, took care of Tibby while we were away.  We might have to call on them again.  Very nice people.
